"There is reason that some of the greatest interpreters of song have their roots in jazz. This workshop will teach you basics about time, dynamics, phrasing, and using the music AND the lyrics to captivate your audience. We will be doing some fun exercises with improvisation and the use of dynamics with the whole group. And then there will be some individuals who will working on an entire song. I will also be discussing the approach of 'making your voice sound like you,' along with how to engage an audience and keep them with you."

    Claudia brought her colleague Elizabeth Benson from Auburn University to SongShop for this one-time event.

    Elizabeth Benson is Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre at Auburn University. She specializes in crossover vocal techniques, including belting for the classically trained singer. She serves as the Department of Theatreís principal singing instructor and music director. She will be presenting a clinic at the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) later in the week, but we get to have her all to ourselves for a session at DePaul.

Over a thousand performances of Menopause, the Musical in Chicago and on tour, for which Chirs Jones of the Chicago Tribune wrote: "Wydetta Carter has been doing her Tina Turner impression since this show opened a year ago.
